Turtles The beaches from Tulum south and along the stretch from Campeche to Carmen are the breeding grounds for sea turtles, who come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. The loggerhead is the most common turtle, along with the green, the hawksbill and sometimes the leatherback varieties. Loggerheads, with their massive bird-jawed skulls, have short fins and grow to about four feet in length. Green turtles lay their eggs every two to three years, storming the beach in large groups. Caracol, as conch is known in Spanish, also provides a delicious meat that Maya people have eaten for hundreds of years. The meat is extracted by drilling a small hole in the shell top and forcing the muscle out. It’s commonly served in ceviche, a dish that uses lime juice to “cook” the meat. Vendors line the dock area on Cozumel selling conch shells. They’re a popular souvenir.
