Many practitioners find it difficult to explicitly link theory and practice or to acknowledge the importance of any theoretical framework in relation to their practice. However, it is important to make the connections between the ideas that inform our practice and the complex processes of practice itself. The difficulty is the artificial separation between theory and practice, and often ideas from practice are not seen as having the same status as more formal theory. Sibeon (1990) provides a framework for understanding the links between formal and informal theory.

This is a fluid and changing story which needs to be constantly reviewed to understand how power is exercised and how it affects the various people involved. Oppression In order for the oppressed to be able to wage the struggle for their liberation they must perceive the reality of oppression, not as a closed world from which there is no exit, but as a limited situation which they can transform. (Freire, 1972: 34) It is from the experiences of people who have been marginalized, who have had their rights denied or violated, that we can understand what is meant by oppression.

Lukes’s (1974) influential work on power has been widely used, particularly in its application to practice and policy in community work, social work and social welfare (Rees, 1991). He developed a three-dimensional view of power – the power that you can see and can clearly challenge, the power you can see but have less clear means to challenge and the power that is less visible, because it is so ingrained in cultural norms, and social, political and legal structures. Power has been described as a social concept which can be used to explore the public and private spheres of life (Barker and Roberts, 1992).
