Witkin and Harrison (2001) point to the dearth of evidence available in social work research to meet the gold standards prized by evidence-based practice proponents. Mullen et al. (2005) also note that there are too few high-quality studies on which to base good practice. Those studies that do exist are largely experimental rather than studies that have been tested in practice conditions. Hammersley (2005), while writing about education, points to a whole range of problems associated with applying research to practice in the way advocated by evidence-based practice supporters.
It is insufficient because there simply is not enough of it and what is available is not easily accessed through existing databases. Fisher also notes that what is termed tacit or implicit knowledge (or practice wisdom) used by social workers is not considered valid knowledge by the more ardent evidence-based practice supporters. His view is that the Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) needs to develop a knowledge base which is much broader and deals with some of the problems outlined above.
