32 i n t r o d u c t i o n Has all that led me to give a sanitized or sentimental account of BP? I hope not. If anything, my concern would be that in seeking to be analytical I may even appear to be insufficiently respectful to its memory and whilst that is certainly not my intention it is for that reason that I have used pseudonyms for those veterans I interviewed for this book. It is certainly the case that this study is a labour of love beyond that which attends any substantial academic endeavour.

In this section, I will explain in detail the kinds of historical materials and methods upon which the analysis in this book is based. As a prelude to that, though, I want to make some brief comments about my general orientation towards these materials and methods. Simply stated, this is that they provide a partial and particular picture, mediated by own interpretations, cultural and historical location, and limited by my own cognitions and abilities, of what is nevertheless an organizational and historical reality.

Those who were still alive when the secret of BP was revealed in the 1970s in many cases learned of it only then, and only afterwards were freed to tell of it. Even from the little that has been said here, I hope it is already possible to see the great interest that the BP story holds from an organizational point of view. The multiplicity of agencies, functions and work types involved in addition to the rapid growth of the operation and the secrecy that surrounded it all conspire to make this a complex and fascinating site within which to conduct an organizational analysis.
