Küster Bedeutung derselben: die beiden symmetrisch angeordneten^ aber ungleich gebildeten Schlangen scheinen aus der Erde emporzusteigen und sich an dem Gefäß, das jedenfalls die Totenspeise enthielt, hinaufzuringeln, um die dargebrachte Spende zu genießen. Die geringe Höhe des Gefäßes (0,28 m) macht indes wahrscheinlich, daß wir uns dasselbe wohl nur als Nachahmung eines größeren Grabgefäßes zu denken haben. Viel deutlicher erscheint diese Absicht der Totenschlange, aus dem Grabgefaß Nahrung zu sich zu nehmen, auf den weit zahlreicheren D a r s t e l l u n g e n , wo d i e S c h l a n g e s i c h um d e n B a u c h d e s G e f ä ß e s w i n d e t , d a n n an dem H e n k e l e m p o r k r i e c h t und s i c h a u f d e n o b e r e n R a n d d e s G e f ä ß e s l e g t .
