Transactional leadership theory explains that transactions are the most common form of leadership behavior (Sims and Lorenzi 1992). It builds, however, on much earlier work by experts such as Kurt Lewin and Douglas MacGregor. The latter, a former president of Antioch College, is best known for his seminal 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise, in which he describes a new view of leader/follower relationships and sets forth his well-known Theory Y.
The utilization of ‘management’ was a political choice that involved a claim to management’s possession of distinctive and valuable expertise.
