Interior designs seem to be a felicitous cross between what you’d find in a New England seaside cottage, and how a nautically minded society hostess would accent her drawing room in London. Bermuda homes usually have lots of Chippendale or Queen Anne furniture (sometimes authentic, sometimes reproduction). Whenever possible, decorators love to include any piece of antique furniture crafted from Bermuda cedar. Combine these features with the open windows, gentle climate, and carefully tended gardens of the fertile, mid-Atlantic setting, and the result is some very charming and soothing interiors.
The archipelago, formally known as “The Bermudas,” forms a landmass of about 54 sq. km (21 sq. miles). Only 20 or so of the islands are inhabited. The largest one, called the “mainland,” is Great Bermuda; about 23km (14 miles) long, it’s linked to nearby major islands by a series of bridges and causeways. Bermuda’s capital, the City of Hamilton, is on Great Bermuda. The other main inhabited islands include Somerset, Watford, Boaz, and Ireland in the west, and St. George’s and St. David’s in the east.
Several films were shot in and around Bermuda. The most famous is The Deep (1977) starring Jacqueline Bisset, Nick Nolte, Robert Shaw, and Lou Gossett—a visually arresting movie about a lost treasure and drugs and, of course, scuba diving off the island’s coast. For one of the scenes, a lighthouse near the Grotto Bay Beach Hotel and Tennis Club was accommodatingly blown up. A movie that was filmed partly in Bermuda is Chapter Two (1979), with James Caan and Marsha Mason. Based on the successful Broadway play by Neil Simon, it is the story of a playwright’s bumpy romance soon after the death of his wife.
