Inside we were greeted by many of our friends from Masbate who had arrived previously: the Dakins, the Clardys and their two children, Claude and LaVerne Fertig, and several others. Claude had been the superintendent of the Capsay mine, between Masbate mine and IXL. S. Army major, he had been called to active duty before hostilities began and had missed all of the adventures and misadventures we had had on Masbate. Here, he was in charge of all engineering work on Panay. It was 10 February 1942.
It came from a Filipino friend who held a high position in the civil government established by the Japanese. The writer had spent the past several weeks in Japanese-held Sorsogon, a small province across the bay on Luzon Island, and had just come to Masbate City by sailboat. The letter read: “Before leaving Sorsogon yesterday morning, I had breakfast with several Japanese officers and civilians. They were apparently a group who had been to Masbate before, and some of the civilians have previously lived at Aroroy.
For two weeks we spent most of our time at Capiz, with occasional short trips to Iloilo on the south coast of the island. Life was slow and easy. We were away from the stress that had been our daily regimen on Masbate. I appreciated being on an island where there was a semblance of a military force on my side of the confrontation. The food was interesting and varied, and the daily fare of Filipino cuisine did not become boring. Actually this was not really the native diet, for the cooks had been trained by Americans and the meals were as stateside as the cooks’ educations and the available supplies could make them.
