Theoretical concepts aid me to frame an analysis in thinking through these experienced and abstract sociological issues. This chapter addresses these statements in introducing mothering and learning ‘disability’. 21 22 Parenting and Inclusive Education ‘Natural’ mothering The field of literature within family studies, social theory, sociology and social psychology undeniably suggests that parenting a child within late modern society, in general, can be a challenging, risky and turbulent task (Miller, 2005; Morgan, 1996; Ribbens, 1994).
Yet this ‘celebration’ of difference is not translated into social practice, as the parental narratives show. Children with impairments may move in and out of behaviour that is considered vulgar, distasteful or, simply, socially inappropriate. This, in many ways, cannot be sanitised, and therefore slips from being different into being difficult; as impaired children at school and their families are considered difficult. Cultural and practical exclusionary tactics are implicitly or explicitly used in contradiction to the rhetoric of inclusive policies and the celebration of difference.
