Global incidence and prevalence data are limited as very few countries have active surveillance for genital warts. It is estimated that in the developed world 1% of sexually active adults between 15 and 49 are affected with warts (Koutsky, Galloway, & Holmes, 1988). Reliable surveillance data are available from a few developed countries, including the UK and the USA. In the UK many patients with genital warts attend GUM clinics and, between 1972 and 2009, the number of genital warts that were diagnosed increased by eightfold in men and 11-fold in women in England and Wales.

Studies in men are far fewer and for several reasons, including differences in sampling techniques and variations in study populations, are difficult to compare. Not surprisingly, a study from an STD clinic in Canada showed that HPV prevalence in men was 70%, whereas prevalences measured from population-based studies have been much more variable, ranging from 3% in Spain to 72% in Brazil. In addition to the extensive literature now available on prevalence, a considerable number of prospective epidemiologic studies have been published which provide information about incidence and persistence.
