Thailand has 76 provinces. Provinces are named after the region’s capital city, and each, except the city of Songkhla, is the largest city in the province. Each of the provinces has a governor who is appointed by the Ministry of the Interior. Most of these governors are career civil servants. There is one exception to this policy and that is in Bangkok, where the governor is elected. Government and Politics Each of the provincial governments is independent from the others, although the central government historically has exercised a large degree of control over all of the provinces.
