Noth, Studien, p. 112. 62. See Noth, Studien, p. 133. PELTONEN Source Criticism as Theory 51 years also advocated some form of what has been called here 'source criticism as theory' in their interpretation of the combination of questions concerning Chronicles' sources and historical nature. Some—such as P. Welten,63 whose method of treating Chronicles was in several respects a direct development of that outlined by Noth 64 —have modified Noth's views in a more critical direction, while others have been ready to admit somewhat more historically reliable information in Chronicles, derived by the author from extra-biblical source(s).
S sources but, rather, in the opposite direction. 62 As we saw above, Noth was convinced that passages where such a procedure was justified were few and far between; one was unable to say anything specific about the historical nature of Chronicles as a whole on such a slender basis. It is obvious that Noth's contention must be seen first of all as a critical reaction against both the complicated literary-critical theories with source-critical conclusions (see below) and, more generally, the excessive source theories of earlier scholars.
84-85. 37. Cf. the discussion in Peltonen, History Debated, pp. 74-76. 38 One thing about which he was adamant (and here we come to the question of Chronicles' sources) was that a critical historian had to rely solely upon available sources. Everything that went beyond the actual sources at hand resulted only in hypothetical constructions. From this point of departure, de Wette launched a fierce attack on the dominant view of his day that Chronicles was a historically reliable work. G. Eichhorn and especially Eichhorn's source postulates, with which he tried to vindicate Chronicles' trustworthiness.
