The NEB, taking the dative as instrumental, translates, 'If the Spirit is the source of our life, let the Spirit also direct our course' (literally, 'If we live by Spirit, by Spirit let us also walk'). If this is correct, here, indeed, a Christian's true aliveness is attributed to the Spirit. But this cannot be counted as a certain instance of such a thought. The first clause could be rendered, 'If we live to the Spirit',13 which would indicate a life lived for, or in conformity with, the Spirit.

LOf. 2 And then, in the New Testament and other Christian writings, 'Holy Spirit' or 'the Holy Spirit' suddenly becomes very frequent. Indeed, it is normal in the New Testament for the adjective 'holy' to be attached to 'Spirit'. It may be that the increasing application of the adjective 'holy' after the Old Testament period is due merely to a reverential avoidance of the divine name,3 or is even a matter simply of idiom and vogue rather than carrying any very pronounced theological significance.
