To lose your name, to suffer a stain on your name, your reputation, is to live thinking less well of yourself, or among others who think less well of you. Does this matter? It appears that human beings like to think they are important. Perhaps they have to think so if they want to live responsibly. But how important are they, really— individually and collectively? Science abstracts from the sense of one’s importance, for that is precisely what would give a bias to the scientist.
The starting position that makes this assumption defensible is that the system itself—whether political, social, or economic, is neutral, not favoring one or another for any particular characteristic. But if we are suspicious that political responsiveness varies systematically by race, class, gender, or some other category, we must scrutinize the assumption and devise strategies to test the validity of the starting claim.
