Unlike some goods and services, the commodification of tourism is based not only on the labour, capital and natural resources used in production, but also on ‘the sign value’ or symbolic value of the tourism experience (see Chapter 7). For MacCannell (1976) tourism, as a commodity, is an expression of ‘the semiotics of capitalist production’.
