There are in-app purchases but they are not required. I actually didn't stop playing this game for the last 3 days now and I didn't use any in-app purchase.
Yes, IAP are not required. But there are credits(the icon G at the top left) and cash. Do you know how to get credits?
You can follow Madfinger games on Twitter and like their Facebook page to get credits.
Also, after you finish some missions you get credits as well.
